Young people from across Wiltshire are being offered the opportunity to play football at a professional ground, in front of thousands of fans, as part of the ‘Lets Kick Racism Out of Football’ campaign. Wiltshire Council have teamed up with Swindon Town Football Club to deliver a series of local football tournaments in Chippenham, Devizes, Salisbury and Trowbridge during October half term for young people aged 15 and 16. Two teams from each tournament will then go forward to a county final which takes places at Stanley Park Sports Ground on 3rd November, before the final two teams compete in the ‘Kick it Out’ final at half time during Swindon Town’s fixture with Sheffield United on 6th November.

Please find attached a leaflet promoting Wiltshire Council’s ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ programme, offering young people aged 15 & 16 the chance to win a place in the county final at the Swindon Town’s County Ground, where they could play in front of 18,000 football fans!

Local tournaments will be taking place in Chippenham, Devizes, Salisbury and Trowbridge during October half term. Please promote this leaflet to any relevant young people or teams, throughout your networks or feel free to add to your websites. Hard copies of the leaflet will be available from next week and will be passed to key partners and leisure providers. I have also attached the consent form that all participants will need to complete in order to take part in the project.

Hundreds of people turned out, Union Jack everywhere, the town centre for the homecoming of the sporting hero.

Bradford on Avon woke up to a golden post box this morning (Sunday) to honour the Olympic achievements of the town’s kayak king Ed McKeever who scooped top spot in the K1 200m at Eton Dorney yesterday.

Former St Laurence student McKeever, 28, dominated the kayak final yesterday taking gold with a winning time of 36.246 seconds adding the Olympic honour to his 2010 world and European titles.

Residents of the town, which has McKeever banners and bunting lining the streets, turned out in force to see Royal Mail staff paint the post box in The Shambles to honour Team GB’s 26th gold medal winner of the 2012 Games.

Having “sat on” the concept of putting an “Olympic torch” on Millie for some while, Kevin drops by at 9pm (ish) last Friday (11th May)  saying – “We need to mount this onto Millie for the Torch day – and have got the Cherry Picker arriving at 06:00 Hrs on Sunday morning (13th ) to install it – What can you do!!” – Well; here’s the story.

Friday night, work on a concept, and draw / sketch

Given the size of the light units etc, this was going to be a very tight fit –  & I had to work with tools etc already to hand.
No time for glue to set, & a single piece wasn’t going to work;  so I settled on 2 pieces, press fitted with a rebate.
By 1 am we had a workable concept and scaled sketch.
If this was “Plan A”,  what was plan B – coat hangers!
     
Saturday morning, search lumber stock for a suitable lump;
This is copper beech, salvaged from a farm near Trowbridge.

So it starts. First thing – set the bandsaw up and produce the basic blanks needed to turn down to shape and size. Also make a 20 degree wedge “jig” in preparation do bore out the light sockets (Time, 10,30am).

The base unit first needed hollowing out to receive the distribution box, then form the mounting collar, and lastly to turn a rebate into the top in order to provide a fix for the (upper) light unit. (Time 12.00).

Now onto the light unit; this needs turning from both ends, first to form the rebate to fit the base, then (from the other end), shape the 20 degree sloped cone on which to counter-sink the lights. (Time 3.15pm). very lucky to have a 40mm core bit to counter bore the light sockets!

Bit of a “jiggle” to get it inside the lamp, but it fitted! Next challenge – what to do with all the “extra” cable lengths from the LEDs; resolved with the assistance of some professional oversight.

After some fiddly stuff getting the wiring sorted it was time to fire up the lamp (time: 4.00pm)
Eureka !!
The last thing to do was provide fixing points (holes) on the base to enable the lamp to be fixed onto Millie’s outstretched hand, and finish with Van Dyke crystal stain.

All done by around 6 pm. After some “user trials” in the Culver Road area, at night, debating the inclusion of some “diffusion” or not, Millie was suitably kitted out on schedule

Meet in the Ashley Road car park at 5.30pm in your best Olympic cycling gear, old or new! A prize of a pint of ‘Red, White & Blue’ to the best dressed rider. Much merriment and Knees up Mother Brown, before returning to Bradford on Avon.
